Short answer
Plan for 15 to 18 hours across five acts
Most critics who published a time finished the campaign in roughly 15 to 18 hours. IGN reported 15 to 18 hours for a first playthrough, Pure Xbox about 16 hours on Hardcore, GamesRadar+ 16 hours with most optional missions done, and Skill Up around 15 hours.
The range is wider at the edges. VGC described it as a 10 to 15 hour experience, while PC Gamer’s reviewer spent more than 20 hours. Difficulty, solo versus co-op play and how much of the side content you chase explain most of the gap.

Why the numbers differ
The campaign alternates between linear missions and districts where you get a few city blocks to cross however you like. In those open sections the game offers secondary objectives, Hard Cases and collectibles, all optional. A player who heads straight for the main marker will finish hours ahead of one who clears each block.
Difficulty matters as well. Reviewers who played alone on Normal still described it as demanding, and boss fights were singled out as long on Hardcore. Deaths and retries add up over five acts.
How the campaign is divided
The story is told in five acts; the official achievement list has milestones for each of Acts 1 through 5. Pure Xbox counted sixteen chapters in total. Guides published so far name four chapters in Act 1 and five in Act 2, which fits that count.
- Act 1 covers the first night: Emergence, Survival of the Fittest, A Gear in Need and Back in the Fold.
- Act 2 opens at City Hall and includes Bravo Squad, Hold the Line, No Gear Left Behind, Flyboys and Overrun.
- Hold the Line is the first large open area and holds 25 Hard Cases on its own, so expect it to run long.
Time for a completion run
A full clear asks for more than the credits. The achievement list includes finishing every act on Insane, completing all secondary objectives, finding every Hard Case and collecting all collectibles, of which guides count 140. No outlet has published a measured time for that yet, so treat any figure you see as a guess until tracking sites have enough submissions.
Co-op changes pacing in both directions. Human squadmates revive more reliably than the AI, which one reviewer criticised, but a group that explores together also spends longer in each district.
Quick questions
How many acts are in Gears of War: E-Day?
Five. The official achievement list tracks progress through Acts 1 to 5, and reviews describe a five-act story.
Is E-Day longer than earlier Gears campaigns?
Skill Up called it quite long by Gears standards, and PC Gamer felt it ran too long. Neither published a side-by-side comparison with earlier games.
Does the time include multiplayer?
No. Review builds only contained the campaign, so none of these times include Horde Siege or Versus.
