Short answer
Two multiplayer modes: 4v4 Versus and 12-player Horde Siege
Yes, E-Day has multiplayer at launch. Versus is competitive 4v4 with four core modes on six new maps. Horde Siege is co-operative, with three squads of four on one large map. Both share one progression system and one set of cosmetics.
This page covers Versus and the systems around it. Every player starts a Versus match with the same loadout, there are no weapon mods, and teams compete for power weapons on the map.

The four Versus modes
| Mode | How you win | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Team Deathmatch | Run the other team out of lives | Uses a pool of team lives rather than a score target; respawn points now shift with the fight. |
| Conquest | Hold zones long enough to score | A zone stays active until one team has accrued enough time in it, instead of rotating on a timer. |
| Demolition | Three successful detonations | Carry a neutral bomb to one of two enemy sites; the planting team defends without respawns. |
| Crucible | Hold the Power Core inside the zone | New mode. The zone moves and shrinks, and the Core can discharge to defend its carrier. |
Limited-time modes rotate in after launch, including a Trick or Treat mode for the Halloween event.
The six launch maps
| Map | Setting |
|---|---|
| Outpost | An abandoned military camp with bunkers and an elevated bridge. |
| Battleship | A wartime vessel being taken apart, with decks and docks. |
| Park | The ruins of a zoo, built around a central fountain. |
| Precinct | The Kalona Police Department the day after it fell. |
| Market | A seaside market with long streets and balconies. |
| Skyward | Connected rooftops with jumps and narrow crossings. |
The maps are symmetrical, in the classic Gears style, and built around the new movement.
Ranked, Social and practice
Playlists are split into Ranked and Social. Ranked opens on October 13, one week after launch. Each ranked mode has its own ladder. After placement matches you receive a Skill Division, which reflects matchmaking skill and can drift, and a Rank, which you climb by earning Rank Rating in wins and lose in defeats. Quitting is penalised.
Social includes 4v4 Quickplay, limited-time modes and Player vs Bot playlists sorted by bot difficulty. Lobbies stay together and vote on what to play next.
Two training spaces sit outside the playlists. Boot Camp is a short course on the new controls. Combat Training is a larger sandbox on a multiplayer map where you can try weapons and spawn small Locust encounters, with four-player co-op.
Progression and unlocks
Player Level runs to 100. You can then Re-Up, resetting to level 1 for an exclusive reward, up to four times for 500 levels in total. There are more than 80 medal series with Bronze, Silver, Gold, Onyx and Diamond tiers. Each week brings 12 challenges, six for Versus and six for Horde Siege, and each season adds 20 seasonal challenges.
There is no battle pass. The Coalition says nearly every cosmetic can be earned by playing, either directly through challenges, achievements and medals or with Coins. Coins from matches have a weekly cap; Coins from medals and levels do not. Iron is the paid currency. The weekly shop rotates on Tuesdays and only features items that are also in the Barracks.
One creator’s tally of the launch build counted about 916 customisation items, with roughly 96% earnable. That is a community estimate, not an official figure.
Not in the game at launch
The Coalition rebuilt the sandbox from scratch and says these legacy features did not make launch. It describes them as not gone from the franchise.
- Meat Shields.
- Chainsaw Duels.
- Some weapons from earlier games.
- Private Lobbies.
- Leaderboards.
