Short answer
Yes, it is a prequel, and no, it is not Gears 6
Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel. Its store description places it fourteen years before the original Gears of War, on the day the Locust Horde first breaks through the surface of Sera. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago return as younger men.
It is not Gears 6. Xbox’s own write-up describes the studio’s choice as an origin story rather than a sequel: “E-Day instead of Gears 6.” The story left open at the end of Gears 5 is not continued here.

Prequel, sequel, remake or reboot?
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is it a prequel? | Yes. It takes place before every other mainline game. |
| Is it Gears 6? | No. It does not continue the story of Gears 5. |
| Is it a remake? | No. It is a new story, with every asset and animation built new. |
| Is it a reboot? | No. It keeps the existing canon and draws on the novels. |
| Is it a full-size game? | Yes. It has a full campaign and two multiplayer modes, at full price. |
Why The Coalition made a prequel
The studio has described the choice as a bet. In Xbox’s June 2026 feature, brand director Nicole Fawcette says the team broke down “what makes Gears Gears” and had hard conversations about what had and had not worked. The reaction to the 2024 reveal, she says, showed them that this was a story people wanted.
Creative director Matt Searcy told IGN in 2024 that it was not a matter of choosing between projects; this was simply the story the team wanted to tell at that point. Phil Spencer, who led Xbox at the time, called a prequel a chance for the team “to establish their Gears.”
There was also a practical gap to fill. Fawcette says Epic never wrote Marcus and Dom’s Emergence Day in detail, which left what she calls “negative space” to work in without contradicting canon.
What happened to Gears 6?
Gears 5 ended on a cliffhanger in 2019, with Kait Diaz setting out after the Locust queen. When E-Day was announced, Microsoft said the prequel was not the end of the series’ other ongoing stories and that the team “is by no means abandoning” what Gears 4 and Gears 5 set up.
That is where things stand. No Gears 6 has been announced, and no date or platform exists for one. The September 2026 launch notes mention that some legacy features may arrive “post-launch or in our next title,” without saying what that title is.
Do you need to play the other games first?
No. Because the story starts on the first day of the war, it does not rely on anything that happens later. Nobody in it knows what the Locust are; the squad invents nicknames for the creatures as it meets them.
Returning players get more from it. IGN’s review notes that you go in already knowing both leads survive, and that the game still finds its own emotional payoff. You will recognise weapons, enemies and names, and see the origin of the Chainsaw Lancer.
Where it sits in the series
| Game | Position |
|---|---|
| Gears of War: E-Day (2026) | First in story order: Emergence Day |
| Gears of War (2006) | 14 years after E-Day |
| Gears of War 2 and 3 | Continue the original trilogy |
| Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 | A later generation; Gears 5 ends unresolved |
This table lists only games discussed in our sources, not every spin-off.
Is it a mainline game?
In scale, yes. It was developed by The Coalition as the studio’s main project, sells at $69.99 and carries a five-act campaign plus Horde Siege and Versus. It just does not have a number in its title. PC Gamer’s review calls it the seventh game in the series.
