Short answer

E-Day stands for Emergence Day

In Gears of War, Emergence Day is the day the Locust Horde burst out from beneath the surface of the planet Sera and attacked humanity. It marks the start of the Locust War, the conflict every earlier game in the series takes place in or after.

The game’s title is that event’s shorthand. Gears of War: E-Day shows the day itself, and the two that follow, for the first time in a game.

What happened on Emergence Day

Xbox’s feature on the game calls it a global catastrophe: the entire surface of Sera breaks open. The Locust arrive through emergence holes, or E-holes, that open in the ground. In the game these can appear anywhere, and at larger scale sinkholes pull down vehicles and whole buildings.

It came without warning and at the worst moment. Sera had just declared peace after the Pendulum Wars, a human conflict that had lasted almost eighty years. The people in Kalona are civilians and off-duty veterans, not an army waiting for an attack.

Why it matters in the series

Every earlier Gears game takes place after this day. Players have seen ruined cities and heard characters refer to E-Day, but the event itself was left largely undescribed. Brand director Nicole Fawcette says Epic never wrote Marcus and Dom’s E-Day story in detail.

That changes the tone. In the older games the world is already destroyed. Here you see homes still lit and meals half-finished while people abandon their cars and run. Fawcette’s point is that the environment gets to tell the story as it happens, rather than as aftermath.

How the invasion escalates in the game

The developers describe a deliberate progression, starting like a monster film and ending as a war.

  1. Feral Wretches pour out first: mindless, animal and frightening in numbers.
  2. Drones appear, and the humans realise the creatures shoot, make weapons and talk.
  3. Larger and stranger units follow, each seen by the characters for the first time.
  4. By the last day the squad faces armoured Brumaks and understands there is an army underground with commanders and structure.

Two meanings of the title

The Coalition says E-Day tells two origin stories. One is the start of the Locust War. The other, in Fawcette’s words, is “a brotherhood coming together”: the bond between Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, which begins the game strained by the death of Carlos Santiago.

The studio designed the Collector’s Edition statue around the same idea, describing E-Day as defined by “two beginnings.”
