Is there a midnight launch?
No. The game does not unlock at midnight in each time zone. It goes live for everyone at the same moment, 15:00 UTC, so players in the Americas get it in the morning of October 6 while players in Japan and Australia get it in the early hours of October 7.
Is the game out yet?
That depends on what you own. If you have the Premium Edition, the Collector’s Edition or the Premium Upgrade, it has been playable since October 1. If you have the Standard Edition, or you plan to play through Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, your start is October 6.
A “Too Early” or “Coming Soon” message on the game tile before October 6 means the licence on that account does not include early access.
Getting ready before the unlock
- Pre-install. Downloads opened on September 29 on Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox PC app and Steam, for buyers and Game Pass members alike.
- Leave room: the PC version needs 115 GB on an SSD.
- Update your graphics driver if you are on PC.
- At unlock time, launch from your library rather than the store page.
What follows launch
Season 1, called Emergence, runs for eight weeks until December 1 and includes three two-week events: Halloween, 20 Years of Gears and Thanksgibbing. The Coalition has named four further seasons: Legacy, Infiltration, Pendulum and Devotion.
November 7, 2026 is the twentieth anniversary of the original Gears of War. The studio has promised a gift for all E-Day players on that date.
