Gears of War: E-Day Early Access: How to Play Early

How to play Gears of War: E-Day early: early access began October 1, 2026 for the Premium Edition, Collector’s Edition and Game Pass Premium Upgrade owners.

On this page

Short answer

You need the Premium Edition, the Collector’s Edition or the Premium Upgrade

Early access went live worldwide on October 1, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. PT (15:00 UTC), five days before the October 6 launch. It is tied to the Premium Edition, which also comes inside the Collector’s Edition.

Game Pass on its own does not include it. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members start on October 6 unless they buy the Premium Upgrade, which adds the Premium content, including early access, to a copy they already have access to.

Steps to start playing early

  1. Buy the Premium Edition ($99.99) on the Xbox Store or Steam, or add the Premium Edition Upgrade, listed at $30.00 on the Xbox Store, to a Standard Edition or Game Pass copy.
  2. Install the full game. Pre-install has been available since September 29.
  3. Restart your console or PC client so the new licence is picked up.
  4. Launch the game from your library, not from its store page.

What is live during early access

Early access is the full game, not a trial. Season 1 started with it, and the weekly challenges Premium owners received on October 1 are the same set everyone gets on October 6, refreshing on October 13. Pre-order bonus items became available in-game from the start of early access.

Two things arrive later. Ranked Versus opens on October 13, a week after the worldwide launch, to give players time to learn the maps. And on PC, offline play was unavailable until October 6, which The Coalition listed as a known issue.

If it says “Too Early”

Support staff in the official Discord addressed this on October 1. The message appears when the account lacks an early access licence, but some eligible players saw it too.

  • Restart the console or PC.
  • Check for a game update; on Steam, force any scheduled update to run now.
  • Launch from your game library rather than the store page.
  • Make sure your regional settings are correct.
  • On Xbox, support marked the issue as likely resolved the same day and suggested signing out and back in. The Steam case was still listed as under investigation.

Is five days worth the difference?

On price alone, the Premium Edition costs $30 more than the $69.99 Standard Edition, and the upgrade is listed at the same $30. The head start is one part of that; the rest is cosmetic packs across five seasons, 1,000 Iron and a campaign weapon pack. If early access was the only draw, the window closes on October 6 and the extra content is what remains.

Quick questions

Does Game Pass include early access to E-Day?

No. Game Pass members can play from October 6. Early access requires the Premium Upgrade on top.

Does pre-ordering the Standard Edition give early access?

No. Pre-ordering any edition gave early access to the August open beta and a cosmetic bonus, not to the full game.

When did early access start?

October 1, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. PT, which is 15:00 UTC, worldwide.
