Xbox Series X|S, two PC stores, handhelds and the cloud
You can play Gears of War: E-Day on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Windows PC through the Xbox PC app or Steam, supported handhelds and cloud gaming. Those are the only platforms Xbox has named.
The Xbox One is not on the list as a native platform, and neither is PlayStation 5 or Nintendo hardware. The Xbox Series X|S is the only console family with its own version.

Will it run on Xbox One?
There is no Xbox One version. Official announcements name Xbox Series X|S only, and the store page carries the “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S” label with ray tracing and 60 fps+ among its capabilities. The PC version requires a hardware ray-tracing graphics card, which gives a sense of the technical floor.
Cloud gaming is listed as a way to play, and it streams the Series X|S version. Xbox’s E-Day posts do not say which older devices can run that stream, so check the Xbox Cloud Gaming device list for your console rather than assuming.
Is it an Xbox exclusive?
On consoles, yes: Xbox Series X|S is the only console platform. It is not exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem as a whole, because it is sold on Steam as well.
As for why, Xbox has not published a detailed reason. Gematsu reported that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the game as an “Xbox console exclusive,” and other press reports in June 2026 claimed a planned PlayStation version was shelved. Microsoft has not confirmed the second part.
What one purchase covers
- Xbox Store purchase: Xbox Series X|S and the Xbox PC app, through Xbox Play Anywhere.
- Steam purchase: the Steam version only.
- Game Pass Ultimate: console, PC, handheld and cloud from October 6.
- Physical Standard Edition: a boxed copy for Xbox. Xbox says the game joins its Disc to Digital programme with early access.
- Collector’s Edition: an Xbox Series X version with a physical disc, or a Steam version with a digital code.
Features that vary by platform
Split-screen co-op for two players is listed for Xbox and is not among the Steam page’s feature tags. Cross-platform multiplayer and co-op work between Xbox and PC. PC gets ultrawide support, uncapped frame rates and a benchmark mode that consoles do not have.
On handhelds, the Steam description says the game is fully optimised for Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X and Xbox Ally. A handheld is still a PC, so the same account-linking rules apply if you want to invite friends on Xbox.
