Best Gears of War: E-Day Settings for PC and Xbox

Best Gears of War: E-Day settings by hardware tier: which preset and upscaler to start from on PC, the options added at launch and what Xbox players can change.

Short answer

Start from the preset the official spec chart assigns to your GPU, then tune from there

The Coalition’s launch spec chart pairs each hardware tier with a preset: Medium for 1080p at 60 FPS on minimum hardware, High for 1440p at 60+ on recommended hardware and Ultra for 4K at 60+ on its top tier. All three assume an upscaler is on. That makes the matching preset the most defensible starting point.

From there the choices are personal. Launch added a field-of-view slider and switches for film grain and chromatic aberration on every platform, and PC players can cap the frame rate or leave it unlimited. No source has published tested per-setting numbers yet, so this page sticks to what the options do.

Minimum tier
Medium, 1080p 60 FPS
Recommended tier
High, 1440p 60+ FPS
Ultra tier
Ultra, 4K 60+ FPS

A sensible order for PC

  1. Run the built-in benchmark on the default preset to get a baseline.
  2. Set the preset from the official chart for your graphics card: Medium, High or Ultra.
  3. Pick the upscaler your card supports. The game offers DLSS, FSR, XeSS and Unreal’s TSR.
  4. Set Max FPS to your monitor’s refresh rate. The choices are 30, 60, 90, 120, 144, 240 or Unlimited.
  5. Adjust field of view, then decide on film grain and chromatic aberration.
  6. Re-run the benchmark. Only then try frame generation if your hardware supports it.

What one high-end test shows

Skill Up reviewed the PC version at 4K on the Ultra preset with DLSS set to Quality on an RTX 4090 and averaged about 75 frames per second, rising further with multi frame generation. That is a single creator’s result on top-tier hardware in a sponsored video, so read it as a ceiling rather than a typical outcome.

One caveat for anyone comparing numbers: the performance overlay in benchmark mode does not count generated frames, so it can report a lower figure than you are actually seeing. The Coalition lists this as a known issue.

Xbox Series X|S

Console players have fewer switches. The FOV slider, film grain, chromatic aberration and HDR calibration options apply on Xbox as well. The Xbox Store lists the game as 60 fps+ with ray tracing, variable refresh rate and HDR10.

  • The beta notes mention a Quality Mode on Series S, which implies a choice between graphics modes on that console.
  • Split-screen co-op runs at 30 FPS according to Pure Xbox’s review.
  • If Series S starts hitching after a long Horde Siege session in Quality Mode, fully quit and restart the game; that was the official workaround during the beta.

Settings that are about comfort, not speed

  • Move the active reload bar back to the top-right corner if the center position distracts you.
  • Use the difficulty and gameplay options in Campaign; changing some of them moves your difficulty tier to match.
  • Pick a menu music track. There are four at launch.
  • On PC, turn off mouse and keyboard lighting effects if they misbehave; there is a setting for Lamp device support.

Quick questions

Does Gears of War: E-Day have an FOV slider?

Yes. It was added for launch on all platforms after beta feedback.

Can I turn off ray tracing?

The official requirements say a hardware ray-tracing capable graphics card is required and cards without it are not supported, so do not expect a non-ray-traced mode.

Why did my graphics settings reset?

That was a beta bug on PC. The launch notes list it as fixed.
